5 things we know about Tomorrowland: A World Beyond

We give you lowdown on Disney’s ultra-secret new sci-fi movie.

It promises jaw-dropping visuals.

The Tomorrowland of the title seems to be somewhere outside of our time and space. In the trailer, George Clooney’s character describes it as “a place where the best and the brightest people in the world came together to actually change it.” So forget your grungy, mopey, Blade Runner-esque visions of the future, this is all shiny and utopian, as eye-dazzlingly gorgeous as the Disneyland attraction that inspired it.

Calm down, ladies, George Clooney’s in it.

Yes, Amal Alamuddin’s swoonsome hubbie headlines as inventor Frank Walker. Rising star Britt Robertson, meanwhile, co-stars as Casey, a girl who comes across a magic pin that somehow grants her access to the world of Tomorrowland.

Britt Robertson’s character seems to be “the one”.

“We’ve been looking for someone like you for a very long time,” Frank tells Casey in the trailer, with Hugh Laurie’s character adding, “He thinks you can fix the future.” So who is Casey, and what’s she got that’s so special? And what is it that needs fixing? Is it a broken lift?

It’s directed by top Hollywood director Brad Bird.

Yes, that Brad Bird, director of The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and reportedly one of the people Disney approached to take on Star Wars: Episode VII. Despite only having three movies to his name (though he has screenwriting credits on *batteries not included and Ratatouille), they’re all five-star titles, which is enough reason to be VERY optimistic about Tomorrowland: A World Beyond.

It’s written by Lost’s Damon Lindelof.

It appears that Tomorrowland: A World Beyond was the brain-bomb of the crazily talented Damon Lindelof, whose previous screen credits include Prometheus, Star Trek Into Darkness and Cowboys & Aliens. On the small screen, he’s best known for showrunning Lost and current HBO fave, The Leftovers, so he’s a guy who certainly knows his sci-fi onions, and one who’s used to delivering original and thoughtful SF stories.

Tomorrowland: A World Beyond arrives at Cineworld on 22 May.
