OMG! 10 spooky secrets revealed by the amazing new Ghostbusters trailer

screen-poster

It's been a long time coming but the first trailer for Spy director Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot has finally, finally arrived – and the movie looks set to deliver a blast of priceless comic chemistry with suitably spine-tingling set-pieces. Before presenting you with it, we've picked out the highlights.

Who you gonna call?

We begin on a note of pure nostalgia, as Ray Parker Jr's classic theme song (Google it, kids) is reduced to a haunting piano arrangement. All the better for transitioning us from the world of the original Ghostbusters to the New York of the present day – and that graffiti shot of the iconic logo is just pure win.

Most haunted

We get our first glimpse of hapless paranormal investigators Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy), Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) and Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) as they attempt to talk down a fearsome spook. It looks like a deliberate callback to the hilarious opening library sequence of the first Ghostbusters movie – albeit with more of the spewing gags we expect from the director and star of Bridesmaids. Plus, is Jillian munching on Pringles?

Meet the team

Although plot details are relatively scarce in the trailer, we do learn that all three women have dedicated their lives to hunting down the paranormal. A brief montage establishes that wacky Jillian is the engineer and designer of some newly rebooted proton packs, Erin deals with quantum physics (in other words, the stuff we don't understand) and Abby is the self-appointed leader.

But will this lot live up to the formidable comic legacy left by Pete Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stanz (Dan Aykroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson)? Only time will tell.

The rogue element

You may have noticed that the fourth team member has been conspicuously absent until now, but fear not. It's time to say hello to a new Ghostbusters recruit in the form of sassy, streetwise Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) who may not have any particular skills but who, in her own words, "knows New York." That'll come in handy when countering the supernatural scourge of the Big Apple who, mysteriously, appear to be on the rise...

A new set of wheels

Remember ECTO-1, the car from the first two movies? Well it gets a new incarnation – sort of – in Feig's reboot as Patty tracks down the ideal vehicle for their spook-chasing needs. Yes, it's a hearse and very possibly in bad taste but we can look past that and appreciate the effort she's put in. (Just ignore her assertion that it's a Cadillac.)

Suited and booted

This is the moment we've been waiting for when our all-female Ghostbusters team rocks up in their newly resprayed car, romper suits and proton packs. But, in typically sly Paul Feig style, they just can't get their verbal co-ordination together. Frankly, that endears them to us all the more.

Slimer's back!

It's pretty self-explanatory but this brief re-appearance of the most popular Ghostbusters phantom (or, to use different parlance, "disgusting blob") is enough to get those of a certain age punching the air.

A new threat

"Somebody is creating a device that amplifies paranormal activity – and we might be the only ones who can stop it." That's as far as the plot goes for this trailer – but frankly who needs more than that when we've got massive ghosts rampaging through Times Square? Bring it on!

Light 'em up!

Not much to see here apart from our heroes bring the fight to the ghosts' doorstep. It's pretty cool.

The new receptionist

Replacing Janine (Annie Potts) is hunky Thor star Chris Hemsworth as loyal Ghostbusters ally Kevin. He might be the new receptionist but he also looks pretty damn good kicking down doors. Well come on – you didn't expect the Marvel star to be entirely deskbound, did you?

A small case of possession...

Melissa McCarthy and Paul Feig have shown themselves to be wonderfully funny collaborators with Bridesmaids, The Heat and Spy. And Ghostbusters looks to offer the actress another outlet for her physical comedy skills when Abby is possessed by a spirit and does the full Exorcist head-rotation. It's Patty's appalled response that really tickles us though – these characters really do look like they have fabulous chemistry.
