Who you gonna call? 11 classic Ghostbusters movie moments

It may have escaped your notice but next year sees the return of a certain spook-busting collective.

Yes, Bridesmaids and Spy filmmaker Paul Feig is rebooting the beloved Ghostbusters series with an all-female ensemble including muse Melissa McCarthy and her Bridesmaids co-star Kristen Wiig.

With series veterans Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Sigourney Weaver all set to cameo, this promises to be one of 2016's biggest nostalgia fests. So to get you in the mood, we've selected some of our favourite scenes from the first two movies. Who you gonna call?

1) The library

The classic chemistry between sarcastic Pete Venkman (Murray), affable Ray Stanz (Aykroyd) and nerdy Egon (the late Harold Ramis) becomes immediately apparent in the opening scenes of the 1984 original. This scene where they venture into the depths of the New York library to try and root out a pesky spook reminds us of how bumbling the guys were prior to their emergence as the entity-bothering Ghostbusters.

2) Something's in the fridge...

Ghostbusters may indeed be one of the greatest comedies of the eighties (and indeed of all time), but it's easy to forget just how menacing the film is. Case in point: Dana Barrett (Weaver) discovers she has a serious paranormal problem when she opens her fridge door and discovers more than just milk is lurking inside...

3) "We got one!"

AKA the moment where the guys finally receive a call and their classic vehicle, ECTO-1, first fires up its siren. We also get a rare moment of enthusiasm from the Ghostbusters' deadpan secretary Janine (Annie Potts).

4) "Some cockroach"

With its assortment of brilliant throwaway gags that stick in the memory, it's little wonder Ghostbusters is as revered as it is. This moment where the team make a vivd impression clad in their romper suits and proton packs is one of the smallest yet funniest bits in the entire movie. Bite your head off, man.

5) He slimed me!

One of the first movie's most iconic moments introduces us to "disgusting blob" Slimer, who promptly launches a full-frontal attack on the hapless Venkman. Off the basis of this little moment (and the ensuing battle in the hotel ballroom), Slimer became one of the most popular Ghostbusters characters. Altogether now: "The flowers. Are Still. Standing!"

6) Containment shutdown

The ghosts aren't the only antagonists of the first movie. An equally big threat is slimy environmental officer Walter Peck (terrifically played by William Atherton) who is suspicious of the Ghostbusters' activities and wants their entire operation shut down. Big mistake. In this scene, he demands their containment system be shut off – resulting in a wholesale, spook-tacular explosion and an invasion of spirits in Manhattan.

7) Dogs and cats living together!

Some of the Murray's greatest lines come in this scene, as the Ghostbusters aim to convince the city's mayor that they can stop the supernatural scourge. When Venkman finally gets one up on the sleazy Peck, it's difficult not to grin with delight.

8) Visitor in New York

During the final battle against the demonic Zuul, the Ghostbusters, now joined by Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) find themselves confronting an enemy that is an odd mix of the endearing and terrifying. It is of course the Stay Puft marshmallow man, a spirit inadvertently plucked from Ray's mind and who ultimately succeeds in splattering Manhattan's residents with waves of delicious goo.

9) Vigo the Carpathian

The much-maligned Ghostbusters II (even Bill Murray confessed to not being a fan) does have its moments. One thing's for sure: the level of spooky threat is ramped up in the form of chilling villain Vigo (voiced with booming portent by legendary actor Max Von Sydow). This scene where he first possesses bumbling museum creator Janosz (Peter MacNicol) is genuinely creepy.

10) The river of slime

Talking of how sinister the second movie is, this moment where Ray discovers a disgusting trail of ectoplasm coursing through New York's sewer system is pretty icky. It turns out this is what has been fuelling the rise of paranormal activity in the sequel – and indeed, Ray barely escapes from this scene alive.

11) Liberty for all

Crowning the overblown action of Ghostbusters II is this ridiculous yet kinda cool climax where Venkman, Stanz, Egon and Winston essentially pilot the Statue of Liberty through New York. Their destination: a showdown with the evil Vigo and a rescue of the imperilled Dana. It may not match up to the original but this moment in the sequel still has us punching the air. And the addition of Jackie Wilson's '(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher & Higher' just makes it better.
