Last year, the pedal-to-the-metal Fast & Furious franchise reached a crossroads with the emotional departure of the late Paul Walker. But if you were expecting the series to stop there, think again – because the next movie is screeching its way onto screens in 2017, the punchy title revealed by star Vin Diesel as Fast 8.

He has also unveiled this new poster – it doesn't show very much but, you know, it's Diesel returning to his most famous franchise, reason to be cheerful surely?

So what do we know about the movie? Well, it's due to start shooting imminently under the guidance of director F. Gary Gray, who recently gave us the terrific, Oscar-nominated N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton.

In-keeping with the globe-trotting exploits of the series, it's set to be another international, automotive extravaganza with a Universal spokesman releasing the following statement: "Universal Pictures is currently in the process of seeking approval from the United States and Cuban governments to explore shooting a portion of the next instalment of the Fast & Furious series in Cuba."

Regarding his late friend Walker's legacy, Diesel said the following: "Paul Walker used to say that eight was guaranteed. And in some ways, when your brother guarantees something, you sometimes feel like you have to make sure it comes to pass. 'So if fate has it, F8...if fate has it, then you'll get this when you hear about it. Seven was for Paul, eight is from Paul."

More details on Fast 8 as we get them. The movie is tentatively pencilled in for an April 2017 release date.
