Brooklyn

What's the story? Saoirse Ronan stars as an Irish girl who must decide between two men in this epic romance.

In 1950s Ireland, Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) wants a better life for herself. There's little work in County Wexford, so the enterprising Eilis makes a decision to emigrate to America. Leaving the comfort of her mother's (Fiona Glascott) home, she sets sail for New York City where she falls in love with the brash Italian-American, Tony (Emory Cohen). But after a while in NYC, she returns to her home country, and meets Jim (Domnhall Gleeson) - now Eilis must choose between two countries... and two men.

Celebrated author Nick Hornby (About a Boy, Fever Pitch) adapts this movie based on the much-loved book by Colm Toibin. Fans of epic romances will love this sumptuous and heart-wrenching tale of love and the choices we are forced to make in life.

Brooklyn opens on 6th November.

The Dressmaker

What's the story? Kate Winslet stars in this quirky Australian movie that blends sweeping landscapes with a dash of murder and revenge.

In the 1950s, Myrtle "Tilly" Dunnage returns to her hometown of Dungatar, an Australian country town, to take care of her ill mother, Molly. Molly had sent Tilly away at the age of ten because of false accusations of murder.

Tilly, an expert dressmaker trained by Madeleine Vionnet in Paris, transforms the locals with her couture creations and in the process, exacts revenge on the people who wrongly accused her of murder all those years ago.

Titanic megastar Kate Winslet delivers a memorable performance as the unpredictable Tilly in this offbeat Aussie offering.

The Dressmaker is released on 20th November.

Carol

What's the story? In an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith"s seminal novel The Price of Salt, Carol follows two women from very different backgrounds who find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York.

As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage.

As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens. While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) begins to question her competence as a mother as her involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) come to light.

Featuring sumptuous direction from Far from Heaven filmmaker Todd Haynes and two outstanding, heartbreaking performances from Blanchett and Mara, Carol is shaping up as one of the year's must-see dramas.

Carol is released on 27th November.
