Critic Mark Kermode and filmmaker Jack Howard on the experience of watching Oppenheimer in IMAX

Christopher Nolan's breathtaking new movie Oppenheimer has been designed with the IMAX experience in mind. The fiery thriller explores the spectacular birth of atomic warfare and was captured with IMAX cameras, amongst the highest-resolution film cameras in the world.

Nolan and his cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot Oppenheimer on a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film. This includes, for the first time, sections captured in IMAX black and white analog photography that alternate with colour visuals throughout the drama.

They discuss Nolan's history in the medium, which stretches back to the opening sequence of The Dark Knight (2008), and explain why the movie's coruscating visuals will attain a radiant new level of resolution when projected in IMAX.
