Touching down with the precision timing of a Top Gun: Maverick fighter jet, the first trailer for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One has arrived in a blaze of glory.
Paramount has cannily landed the trailer for their blockbuster espionage property at the same time that the hype on the studio's Top Gun sequel goes through the roof. (The trailer is also attached to the theatrical release of Top Gun, should you crave the big-screen presentation.)
Tom Cruise reprises his other other signature role, that of the irrepressible secret agent Ethan Hunt, for a spectacular-looking adventure that sends bikes off mountains and cars hurtling through the narrow streets of Rome.
The plot? That's unclear at this stage. In addition to Hunt, a bevy of familiar faces returns including Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa Faust, Simon Pegg's Benji, Vanessa Kirby's White Widow and Ving Rhames' Luther Stickell.
For the first time since 1996's Mission: Impossible, the movie that kicked the series off, shadowy IMF chief Kittridge (Henry Czerny) takes centre stage. He appears to confront Hunt with a difficult moral choice, setting in motion the kind of globe-trotting adventure we expect from the franchise.
New faces include Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Indira Varma, Rob Delaney, Cary Elwes and Shea Wigham.
Returning writer-director Christopher McQuarrie seeks to one-up 2018's remarkably exciting Mission: Impossible - Fallout, which pushed at the boundaries of seat-gripping stuntwork.
As is evident from the title, Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning is the first of an ambitious two-parter that may, or may not, conclude the hugely profitable, Cruise-led series. Mission: Impossible is one of the rare franchises that has got better with age, accruing more and more critical acclaim and box office gold to go with its escalatingly audacious action sequences.
