Raya and the Last Dragon is the latest Disney animation, and a brand new trailer teases what to expect. In contrast with the first teaser, which struck a more mystical, mist-shrouded, Lord of the Rings-aping tone, this preview plays up the comedy elements. And we're already identifying some potentially scene-stealing characters who could become established as Disney favourites.
Star Wars actor Kelly Marie Tran voices Raya, the brave warrior tasked with bringing her kingdom of Kumandra back together. To achieve her goal, she has to summon the presence of the last-ever dragon, Sisu, voiced with charismatic sass by Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians; Ocean's 8). Once, humans and fire-breathers lived in harmony, but now they're at loggerheads. Raya must restore peace to the land – if the fast-talking Sisu will assist in any way.
It looks gorgeous, with co-directors Don Hall (who developed Disney hit Big Hero 6) and Carlos Lopez Estrada eagerly drinking in some beautiful landscapes. The movie's look was reportedly designed on several countries in South-East Asia, including Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia, and it clearly shows. This is the first original proposition (i.e. not a sequel) from Walt Disney Animation Studios since the 2016 double-whammy of Zootropolis and Moana, so we've got high hopes.
The top-notch supporting voice cast including Gemma Chan (Captain Marvel), Daniel Dae Kim (Lost), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) and Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange). And with a score from Maleficent's James Newton Howard, we can expect both our adrenal glands and tear ducts to get a workout.
Despite all that, we reckon it's the presence of Little Noi, an infant con artist, that's set to steal hearts. Check out the first trailer below.
As per the trailer, Raya and the Last Dragon is set for theatrical release on 5th March. However, given the current UK circumstances, this is subject to change. Nevertheless, tweet us your reactions to Disney's latest @Cineworld.
