While Dune: Part Two guzzles up box office dollars at the speed of a rapacious sandworm, Dune: Part 3 has been officially confirmed. Director Denis Villeneuve is on board to helm the next chapter in the sci-fi saga, which will be adapted from author Frank Herbert's book Dune: Messiah.
Dune: Part Two resolved itself on a dark and bleak note as Arrakis messiah Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) was revealed to be anything but. Dune: Messiah picks up several years into Paul's reign as 'kwisatz haderach' during which time he has presided over an intergalactic jihad that has seen billions of people murdered.
Deadline confirms Villeneuve's partnership with Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures on Dune 3, and all three parties have collaborated on the previous two Dune movies. The narrative will pick up with Paul's now grown-up daughter Alia Atreides who appeared fleetingly in Dune: Part Two. Another key character who was off-screen in Dune: Part Two will also play a significant role.
It's expected that Chalamet, plus Chani actor Zendaya and Princess Irulan actor Florence Pugh, will all return for Dune: Part 3. In the meantime, Legendary has reportedly tapped Villeneuve to adapt Pulitzer Prize nominee Annie Jacobsen's speculative non-fiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario. The book explores the potential outcomes of a nuclear war based on copious interviews with military personnel and civilian experts.
Villeneuve seems to be following in the footsteps of his contemporary and friend Christopher Nolan whose atomic epic Oppenheimer swept this year's Oscars.
