Avatar: watch the new trailer for the upcoming 4K HDR re-release

Avatar is being re-released at Cineworld cinemas ahead of this December's eagerly anticipated sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water.

James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster Avatar rose to become the highest-grossing movie of all time. The movie capitalised on its immersive and ground-breaking motion-capture CGI, which was further emphasised by a resurgent emphasis in RealD 3D presentation.

The end result whisked audiences into the extraordinary world of Pandora, variously lush, exotic and terrifying by turns. The film's story of the indigenous Na'Vi tribe and their battle against colonial oppressors bore several real-life parallels and further swept viewers along.

Here is the new poster showcasing Zoe Saldana's fierce and noble Na'Vi warrior Neytiri, who returns in this year's sequel.

 

Avatar is screening in a gleaming new 4K HDR restoration, which promises to imbue the multifaceted colours and textures of Pandora with even greater depth.

Here's a brand new trailer to send your heart soaring in the manner of a winged Ikran. Many classic images come flooding back, from the gravity-free, flying mountains to the climactic battle between Sam Worthington's Jake Sully and his former Colonel turned nemesis Quaritch (Stephen Lang).

Avatar is re-released at Cineworld on September 23rd so scroll down to check out the trailer.

 

All of that is preparation for Avatar: The Way of Water, which reunites us with both Jake and his new-found Na'Vi partner Neytiri.

Following a series of events, both characters are forced to take shelter with the aquatic Metkayina tribe. The sequel's emphasis on underwater photography meant Cameron had to teach the film's actors, including Kate Winslet (playing Metkayina member Ronal), to free-drive for several minutes.

Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver return from the previous movie, both of their deceased characters having apparently regenerated in new avatar bodies. Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh and Jemaine Clement are among those making their Avatar franchise debut.

Avatar: The Way of Water will be followed by a series of sequels released on a two-year cycle. That means we'll be venturing back to Pandora (and maybe beyond?) in 2024, 2026, and 2028.

For now, let's content ourselves with the trailer for the first sequel. Avatar: The Way of Water is released at Cineworld on December 17th.
