Following the success of slasher 'fivequel' Scream (total box office: $107 million and counting), it's been confirmed that another Scream film is on the way. Deadline confirms that distributor Paramount and production company Spyglass are reuniting with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet for Scream 6, which promises another round of meta-movie mayhem.
The writer of the first two Scream movies, Kevin Williamson, will act in an executive producer capacity as he did on the fifth film. Once more, the script will be co-written by Zodiac's James Vanderbilt with production "slated to begin this summer."
The fifth Scream film continued the legacy of the late director Wes Craven who passed away in 2015. He revitalised the slasher movie genre with the original Scream, working with Williamson to inject sly, self-referential humour into the bloodcurdling horror template. Given their background with the wryly funny and gory Ready or Not, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gilpin were well-positioned to adopt Craven's mantle, and the fifth Scream has become the best-received film in the series since the second instalment.
In the movie, original generation survivors Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Dewey Riley (David Arquette) must help a new generation to navigate the deadly killer's mind-games. However, with the film-within-a-film franchise Stab having reached a critical mass, the latest psycho has seen fit to shake up the rules a bit, meaning anyone is potentially for the chop. Jack Quaid, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega are among the bright young things trying to avoid Ghostface's knife.
“Working with such a wonderful and talented family of creators – and in the lineage Wes and Kevin so expertly built – has been the thrill of a lifetime and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter in the Scream saga to life,” said the directors who go by the collective name of Radio Silence. "
“We are tremendously grateful to the fans around the world who enthusiastically received our film. We can’t wait for audiences to see what Radio Silence, writers Jamie & Guy and Project X have in store for our Woodsboro family,” said representatives for Paramount and Spyglass.
Vanderbilt and co-writer Guy Busick put out the following statement: "Is this real life? Getting to collaborate once again with our friends on the next installment of the Scream story is more than we could have hoped for. We are overwhelmed that we get to continue to play in the sandbox that Kevin and [Wes Craven] created. It is, as Ghostface would say, an honour.”
