Bel Canto

What's the story? Based on Ann Patchett's best-selling novel, BEL CANTO is a dramatic love story that follows a famous soprano (Julianne Moore) who travels to South America to give a private concert at a party for a wealthy Japanese industrialist (Ken Watanabe). Just as the glittering gathering of diplomats and politicians convenes, the mansion is taken over by a guerrilla rebel group demanding the release of their imprisoned comrades. Threats are made, lives are lost, a tense negotiation begins, and a long standoff ensues. While they are confined to the house, the hostages and their captors, who speak different languages, are forced to find ways to communicate. Music, especially the beautiful arias performed by Moore's character, sparks a shared sense of camaraderie and even love, uniting the disparate housemates as they form unexpected bonds, overcome their differences, and discover their shared humanity.

What's the story? Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron) is one of the most influential women in the world. Smart, sophisticated, and accomplished, she's a powerhouse diplomat with a talent for...well, mostly everything. Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen) is a gifted and free spirited journalist with a self-destructive streak. The two have nothing in common, except that she was his baby sitter and first crush. When Fred unexpectedly reunites with Charlotte, he charms her with his self-deprecating humour and his memories of her youthful idealism. As she prepares to make a run for the Presidency, Charlotte impulsively hires Fred as her speechwriter, much to the dismay of her trusted advisors. A fish out of water on Charlotte's elite team, Fred is unprepared for her glamorous and high stakes lifestyle. However, sparks fly as their unmistakable chemistry leads to a round-the-world romance that becomes embroiled in a series of dangerous and outlandish incidents.

Nadhoo Khan (Punjabi)

What's the story? Nadhoo Khan is a story of a man's journey to fulfill his lifelong dream. Set in the pre-independence era in India Nadhoo Khan follows Chanan, a guy with a poor physique who aspires to be a wrestler. Nobody from his family supports his dream but his grandfather. He takes him to a guru who agrees to train him on one condition that he is to stay away from women. Chanan agrees but is unable to do so as he falls for a girl during a wedding. His grandfather is disappointed in him for breaking his promise. Chanan then throws himself into his training. His next obstacle is that he is to face his lady love's brother in the ultimate competition. Of he wins he gets the girl and makes his grandfather proud. Can Chanan fulfill his dreams? This story of sacrifice, love and dreams is sure to tug at your heart!

ROH Royal Opera Live: Faust (Thursday 30th April, 6.45pm)

What's the story? There are many versions of the story of Faust, who trades his soul with the Devil for youth and power, but Gounod's opera remains one of the most constantly enthralling. Michael Fabiano stars as Faust, with Diana Damrau as his beloved Marguerite and Erwin Schrott as the diabolical Mephistopheles. Virtuoso leading roles, a large chorus, sensational sets, ballet and an ecstatic finale make this the epitome of theatrical spectacle – the lavish scale of French grand opera is wonderfully in evidence in this production by David McVicar, set in 1870s Paris. Above all, the music includes several of popular opera's most recognizable numbers, performed by a cast of great international singers and the Royal Opera Chorus.
