Tom Holland is putting us all to shame in 2020. Not content with his starring roles in Uncharted, Spider-Man 3 and Chaos Walking, he's got another movie called Cherry on the go. And this is very different from those blockbuster franchise propositions.
Cherry, adapted from Nico Walker's novel of the same name, reunites Holland with his Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo. The movie is one of the latest to emerge from the Russo's AGBO production company, already responsible for Chadwick Boseman vehicle 21 Bridges and Chris Hemsworth thriller Extraction. The first images from Cherry have been released on the AGBO Instagram account where the film is described as a "darkly humorous, unflinching coming of age story". Joe Russo tells Vanity Fair that Holland's character Cherry undergoes a memorable and head-spinning journey, ranging from college drop-out to Iraq war veteran, and later PTSD-afflicted junkie to bank robber.
“He travels a great distance over a 15-year period,” Russo explains. “The movie’s broken up into six chapters that reflect those different periods, and each one has a different tone. It’s shot with different lenses, different production design. One’s got magical realism. Another chapter is absurdism. Another is horror…There’s a bit of gonzo in it. It’s raw in its tone. He’s a character in existential crisis.”
According to Anthony Russo, the pleasure of the film comes with its complex relationship between intimacy and wide-scale action: "We do think about it as an epic film, and it is very much a person’s life journey. But it does have a little bit of a split personality between being this character study and an epic life cycle.”
Holland has already proven his blockbuster mettle with the Marvel Spider-Man and Avengers movies. And his leading man status will be further tested with his starring role as Nathan Drake in PlayStation adaptation Uncharted. But Cherry sounds like a unique opportunity for Holland to push his dynamic range, not unlike the recent, twisted southern gothic thriller The Devil All The Time, in which the actor excelled as a young man reckoning with his tortured family history.
