Tom Cruise soars on the new poster for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

As a movie title, Mission: Impossible should be done under the trades description act. In the seventh instalment of the blockbuster franchise, Dead Reckoning Part One, Tom Cruise once again transforms the so-called impossible into an exhilarating, seat-gripping feat of big-screen reality. Here's the new poster to prove it, one that proudly shows off Cruise's audacious, gravity-defying motorbike-off-a-cliff-into-a-base-jump centrepiece.

It's astounding to think that this is just one of the jaw-dropping stunts on offer as the increasingly excellent Mission: Impossible franchise once more spans the globe. Cruise's world-saving IMF agent Ethan Hunt mixes it up with a host of familiar allies and enemies, some of whom date right the way back to the origins of the big-screen series in 1996.

The stacked cast includes Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Cary Elwes, Rob Delaney, Angela Bassett, Pom Klementieff, Hannah Waddingham and Henry Czerny. Plot details are under wraps but with locations ranging from white-hot deserts to the bustling streets of Rome to the dramatic fjords of Norway (where the aforementioned bike sequence was captured), one can be assured of a sweeping, action-packed ride.

Cruise and the cast assemble under the vision of writer-director Christopher McQuarrie, here making his third Mission movie (this makes him the most ubiquitous filmmaker in the series so far). McQuarrie's desire to push the stunt work and the internecine team dynamics has helped propel the series to new heights. The most recent movie, 2018's Fallout, is the most successful so far with $787 million in the bank.

Will Dead Reckoning Part One top those results? And will the soon-to-be-released Dead Reckoning Part Two, due for release in 2024, somehow top its predecessor? One thing at a time. For now, let's anticipate the release of the former on July 14th.
