Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer confirmed for Call Me By Your Name sequel

Here's some news to lift your spirits: Oscar-winning drama Call Me By Your Name is officially getting a sequel.

The 2017 movie was based on Andre Aciman's book, recapping the 1983 romance between teenager Elio and the older Oliver. In the central roles, Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer proved captivating, with the former getting an Oscar nomination for his heart-rending work. Director Luca Guadagnino was also nominated, and screenwriter James Ivory walked away with the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

News has now come in that Guadagnino, Chalamet and Hammer will be reuniting for sequel Find Me. The film is based on Aciman's follow-up book of the same name, which picks up with the various characters years later. This includes Elio's father Sami (played by Michael Stuhlbarg), now divorced, and still in touch with his son, who has become a concert pianist in Paris.

Elio, for his part, is still haunted by memories of his passionate relationship with Oliver. The latter is now a college professor in America, and equally haunted by ghosts of the past. Events soon set in motion a collision course between the various characters.

Guadagnino told Italian publication Gay.It (relayed in English via The Playlist) that he was planning a meeting in America with a screenwriter. However, said meeting was called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, the news confirms that the movie is on the cards.

"I was going to America to meet a writer I love very much, whose name I don’t want to mention, to talk about the second part," Guadagnino said. "Unfortunately, everything is canceled. Of course, it’s a great pleasure to work with Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stulhbarg, Esther Garrel, and the other actors. They will all be there in the new film."

While Chalamet has long expressed enthusiasm for a sequel, co-star Hammer has signalled caution, saying he would only agree if the script was right.

"[The first one] really perfect storm of so many things, that if we do make a second one, I think we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment," Hammer told Vulture in March 2019. "I don’t know that anything will match up to the first, you know? I mean, look. If we end up with an incredible script, and Timmy’s in, and Luca’s in, I’d be an a*****e to say no. But at the same time, I’m like, that was such a special thing, why don’t we just leave that alone?"
