The Batman busts the box office with second-biggest pandemic debut

The Batman may just prove to be the next box office saviour. The DC movie, directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson in the title role, has spread its wings to the tune of $250 million worldwide. That's the second-biggest opening weekend we've had during the pandemic, coming just behind Spider-Man: No Way Home, which has taken $1.8 billion to date.

According to Box Office Mojo, The Batman took $128.5 million at the domestic box office and an additional $120 million worldwide. That means it's already exceeded its production budget of $200 million in its first three days of release (although there will also be associated marketing and publicity costs). It's clear vindication for Reeves' vision, a near-three-hour, relentlessly broody reinvention of the Dark Knight that puts Pattinson's glowering Bruce Wayne centre stage.

The president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros, Jeff Goldstein, told Variety that “it’s fun to see the public really embrace the movie." He adds: “Since the movie is three hours long, it became appointment viewing. That bodes well for its run on the big screen. It helps that the word of mouth is so strong."

Rich Gelfond, the CEO of Imax, added: “In its first theatrical exclusive blockbuster release in more than a year, Warner Bros proved the power of a theatrical-first approach, and that great execution on a creative launch plan is the best way to drive long-term value.”
