It's Easter Monday and we hope you've all gorged yourselves senseless on chocolate. But did you know there's a completely different kind of Easter egg, in the form of hidden jokes located within your favourite movies?

Animated movies

Mrs Potts in Disney's Tarzan

Nice bit of cross-referencing here between Beauty and the Beast and a completely different Disney property.

The Shining in The Angry Birds Movie

The evil pigs appear to be taking a life from the terrifying ghostly twins seen in Stanley Kubrick's classic horror.

The Shining carpet in Toy Story 3

Angry Birds isn't the only animated movie referencing one of the most chilling horror movies ever. Pixar’s CG trilogy seems to have a deep love for Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, sneaking in references from the carpet in Sid’s house (which is exactly the same pattern as the one in the Overlook Hotel in The Shining), to a security camera with the model number "OVERLOOK R237" (room 237 was the place in The Shining that Jack Nicholson’s character has one of his most terrifying encounters).

Minions in The Secret Life of Pets

Did you spot the little minion on Norman's owner's night stand? How sly is that?

Frozen in Disney's Zootropolis

Yep, it's two elephants dressed like Anna and Elsa from Disney's Frozen!

Planet of the Apes

Three orangutans adopt the classic pose. Subtle, but effective.

Harold Ramis putting the bust in Ghostbusters

One of the original Ghostbusters icons is honoured in style, immortalized as a bust in the background of Columbia University.

 

E.T. in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

And not just one but a whole group of them! (See also Yoda popping up in E.T. itself.)

The Mall switcheroo in Back to the Future

Marty McFly's time-travelling shenanigans lead to a fleeting and very clever gag towards the end of the movie. (Remember: it was Twin Pines Mall at the start.)

 

Ian Malcolm gets a shoutout in Jurassic World

There are many nods to the Jurassic Park film in 2015's Jurassic World including a subtle shout-out to Jeff Goldblum’s character, Ian Malcolm. Look closely on the desk of dino geek Lowery (Jake Johnson) and you'll see a copy of a book titled God Creates Dinosaurs, written by none-other than everyone’s favourite gangly mathematician, Ian Malcolm.

 

Superhero movies

Captain America's shield in Iron Man

Look in the back left of the following image. Had Cappy and Tony Stark crossed paths before we even got to the first Avengers movie?

Feige's Pizza in Deadpool

Marvel chief Kevin Feige is immortalized in food form in the deliriously funny superhero extravaganza.

Howard the Duck in Guardians of the Galaxy

Is Benicio Del Toro's mad-haired Collector character a fun of the much-reviled 80s movie? Either way, it's a blast seeing Howard back.

The Joker in The Dark Knight Rises

Heath Ledger may have tragically died in 2008 but that wasn't enough to stop his celebrated villain turning up in Christopher Nolan's third Batman movie. If you look closely, you can see The Joker on the front of the magazine in this shot!

Starbucks in Fight Club

Did you know there's a Starbucks cup inserted into every scene of David Fincher's cult classic? It's a devious way of reinforcing the film's anti-consumerist message.

The X of Doom in The Departed

Nope, not some weird occult thing but just a very clever way of director Martin Scorsese foreshadowing who's for the chop in his modern crime classic.

Batman v Superman in I Am Legend

Now this one is properly weird. A full nine years before the official movie was released, a logo appears in the background of the post-apocalyptic Will Smith thriller...

Club Obi Wan in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Another bit of Spielberg/Lucas in-jokery, this time during the blistering opening of the 1984 adventure.

C-3PO and R2-D2 in Raiders of the Lost Ark

With Steven Spielberg and Geroge Lucas being best pals, it kind of makes sense that Spielberg would sneak in a sly reference to his mate’s other Harrison Ford-headlining movie series. Look behind Indy in the Well of Souls scene and you’ll see some hieroglyphics, among them the figures of C-3PO and R2-D2.
