That impact tremor you can feel marks the arrival of the prologue for Jurassic World: Dominion. The five-minute extract teases the third and final Jurassic World movie, in which Colin Trevorrow once again takes the helm as director. (He sat out 2018's Fallen Kingdom in favour of J.A. Bayona.)
The preview originally played in front of the IMAX release of Fast and Furious 9. Now, however, it's available for all to see. The first half provides a first in the Jurassic Park/World universe: a glimpse of our prehistoric ancestors in their natural Cretaceous habitat. In a strong reminder of this tooth-and-claw world, the iconic T-Rex is killed by an even more ferocious beastie, before we get a glimpse of the bloodsucking mosquito that gave rise to the creation of Jurassic Park.
"I really wanted to not just tell an origin story for the T-Rex that we love, but to really put into visual terms this story that we've been told for 30 years about how dinosaurs were made from DNA fossilised in amber," Trevorrow tells Empire Magazine. "Sometimes we put a human face on things — I wanted to put a dinosaur’s face on things and see what actually went down. And now canonically we know that the dinosaur that we love, the T-Rex, was brutally murdered by the Giganotosaurus. And that's part of the story we're telling for the film.
The second half of the video appears to pick up directly from the events of Fallen Kingdom. At the end of that movie, you'll remember that a little girl decided to free the incarcerated dinosaurs, setting them loose on the American mainland. Her reasoning: "Because they're like me." We imagine that Dominion will resolve that particular cloned child thread, but the real attraction will be in seeing a recognisable human world populated by all manner of outsized monsters. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are back as Owen and Claire. They're joined by the original Jurassic Park trio of Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, the last of whom made a cameo appearance in Fallen Kingdom in front of a congressional committee. His character, Ian Malcolm, has consistently acted as the voice of alarm throughout the franchise, and it appears that Malcolm's worst fears are about to be realised with Jurassic World becoming a terrifying reality.
Keep a close eye on that glass of water when Jurassic World: Dominion is released in Cineworld cinemas on 10th June 2022.
