Jurassic Park was hailed as a breakthrough in cinematic CGI effects, but the total amount of CGI amounted to less than 15 minutes. The chilling immersiveness of Steven Spielberg's blockbuster largely owed itself to the late Stan Winston's extraordinary animatronics, particularly the towering T-Rex model. And the film's lifelike model-work has cast a shadow over the subsequent movies in the franchise, particularly as Hollywood has become more reliant on computer graphics.
It seems that the makers of the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion want to assert their animatronic credentials. So much so that several behind the scenes photos have been shared on the film's Instagram page (via The New York Times), which also showcase the production adhering to the new COVID-19 safety protocols. The second shot (of three) reveals the return of the dreaded Compys, which were responsible for the grisly death of Peter Stormare's Dieter in 1997's The Lost World.
Dominion will be the third and final Jurassic World movie, and the sixth Jurassic Park movie overall. Colin Trevorrow returns to the director's chair, having sat out 2018's Fallen Kingdom (that was directed by J.A. Bayona). The movie will pick up the Fallen Kingdom storyline, which culminated in dinosaurs escaping into America's heartland. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard return as Owen and Claire, as do original Jurassic Park veterans Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum.
