Idris Elba to voice Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2

The 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog movie ran rings around the box office competition, eventually chasing down $319 million worldwide. The combination of Sega nostalgia, a freshly revamped Sonic design (after die-hards decried his original look) and a scene-chewing Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik appeared to hit the sweet spot.

A sequel was therefore inevitable, not least because of the mid-credits stinger teasing Carrey in the classic Robotnik garb and whiskers. Director Jeff Fowler returns to give us the last fast-paced Sonic instalment with Ben Schwartz again voicing the titular character. He's joined by a familiar and much-loved face: Miles 'Tails' Prower (voice actor TBC), who made his debut during the first film's closing credits reveal.

Reports Deadline, the sequel has now enlisted Idris Elba who's set to voice the echidna known as Knuckles. As famous as Sonic and his pal Tails, Knuckles, as per the original Sega videogames, is known as the guardian of the Master Emerald. Elba revealed his casting with a teasing Instagram post.

Elba can currently be seen as the master assassin, and scourge of Superman, Bloodsport in James Gunn's riotously anarchic The Suicide Squad. Fingers crossed that his incarnation of Knuckles will be ever so slightly more wholesome. Stay tuned to the Cineworld blog for more details and the trailer reveal. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set for release on 8th April 2022.
