The Farewell is one of the most talked-about films of the year. Written and directed by Lulu Wang – and based in part on her own life experiences – this bittersweet drama revolves around a family who find out that their grandmother is terminally ill. Rather than tell her the news, they organise a wedding in an attempt to unite the family one last time before she dies.
A hit at this year’s Sundance London film festival, where it scooped the prestigious Audience Award, The Farewell is showing at Cineworld cinemas now. But last week, we gave Cineworld Unlimited members the chance to see the film early, via one of our special Unlimited screenings. What did they think of it? Here are just some of the reactions on Twitter…
David was impressed with the film’s leading actress, Awkwafina, and thinks she could be in for a successful night at next year’s Academy Awards…
So, yeah, #TheFarewell was absolutely wonderful! Awkwafina was phenomenal, give her all the Oscars! Thank you @cineworld for another excellent #unlimitedscreening pic.twitter.com/3eypYZBB5C

Corinna was moved by how close the family were in the film…
I loved this film so much. If there is any movie that you should support in Independent film and spend your money on, it’s this one. The amount of love that this family has for their grandma is what makes this film so special. #TheFarewell #CineworldUnlimited

Joe has seen a lot of films through his Cineworld Unlimited membership this year, and thinks The Farewell is up there with the best…
#TheFarewell was really great, amazing soundtrack and cinematography. This was also the 80th film for my first year with #CineworldUnlimited.

For Graham, the movie provoked a number of different emotions…
Absolute treat of a film, one of the best of 2019 for sure. Beautifully observed film about all the joy and sorrow families bring to one another. Parts of it were funny and parts of it moving without ever overdoing either. Culturally very interesting as well

Mike said the film delivered more than he had expected, and was another to praise the main star…
Really enjoyed it, not as much of a comedy as I expected but was so much more. First time I've seen Awkwafina and she is impossible to take your eyes off, although the entire cast were fantastic

Not everyone loved the movie, however – Natalie felt that the pace wasn’t quite right…
I did enjoy it, but was expecting more and felt it was a bit slow going in parts. One of those films for me that the Unlimited card really comes into it's own, as if I'd paid to see it normally, I feel I'd have been disappointed.

And Jez had been hoping for something a little more easy-going…
Tough going for @Lady_Cupcakez and myself. I think it has to be ‘your sort of thing’.
