Awards season is in full swing with the reveal of the 2022 Golden Globe winners. Despite not being televised, the Globes ceremony still managed to champion several of last year's splashiest movie releases, beginning with West Side Story.
Steven Spielberg's critically acclaimed remake of the 1961 musical waltzed away with the Best Picture – Comedy or Musical award, and breakout star Rachel Zegler, who plays Maria, won Best Actress for the same category. Meanwhile, Zegler's co-star, Ariana DeBose, snagged the Best Supporting Actress trophy for her scene-stealing role as Anita.
Elsewhere, there was a strong showing for Disney's Encanto, which snatched the Best Animated Feature trophy. The movie is from the makers of Zootropolis and showcases the music of In the Heights and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Meanwhile, composer Hans Zimmer won the Golden Globe for Best Original Score for Dune. Zimmer's haunting mixture of pan-Arabic tones, specialty instruments and electronics infused life into Denis Villeneuve's sweeping two-part sci-fi spectacular, which is set to conclude in 2023.
Will Smith claimed Best Actor - Drama for his stirring performance as Richard Williams in King Richard. The well-received movie takes an intimate look at Williams' efforts to school his tennis prodigy daughters Venus and Serena. Smith's first Golden Globe nomination since 2016's Concussion converted into his first-ever win at the ceremony.
Lastly, Kenneth Branagh's lauded movie Belfast, out here on 21st January, picked up the Globe for Best Screenplay. Branagh's intensely personal, black and white drama showcases a sublime performance from Jude Hill as a plucky young boy growing up amidst the Troubles in 1970s Northern Ireland. The film's success at the Globes comes on the heels of its warm reception from our 14th Secret Screening – check out the responses here.
