Just because you can't see movies on the big screen at the moment, doesn't mean you can't get excited about what's coming. And you can always rely on Instagram star, and occasional blockbuster movie actor, Dwayne Johnson, to pull us out of the doldrums.
The man formerly known as The Rock has confirmed that we'll be getting a sequel to 2019 hit Hobbs & Shaw. The movie spun off from the Fast & Furious franchise, heading down a different avenue as Luke Hobbs (Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) took on the evil Brixton (Idris Elba). It was a huge hit, grossing more than $759 million worldwide, so a sequel was perhaps inevitable.
"We are developing now the next film, the next [Hobbs & Shaw] movie, and I’m pretty excited about it…Just gotta figure out the creative right now, and the direction we’re going to go," Johnson posted on Instagram (relayed via Collider).
The characters of Hobbs and Shaw were introduced in separate Fast & Furious movies. Government agent Hobbs first appeared in 2011's Fast Five as the enemy of Vin Diesel's car-jacker Dominic Toretto, eventually becoming his ally in the later movies.
Statham's Shaw was introduced as the arch-nemesis of both Toretto and Hobbs in 2015's Furious 7, before he later morphed into a reluctant ally and eventual frenemy of Johnson's character. Their competitive bond was cemented in 2017's Fast & Furious 8 as they cast glowering (and, some might say, lustful) looks at each other from opposing prison cells.
It's unclear how far the Hobbs & Shaw series will go. Given that the anthology Fast & Furious movies are about to hit their ninth film (due for release in April 2021), with the tenth on the way after that, we might imagine there's a lot of mileage in the Johnson/Statham bromance after the main series has finished.
