Legendary detective Hercule Poirot is on the hunt for a killer, again, in the first trailer for Death on the Nile. The new Agatha Christie adaptation comes to the screen courtesy of actor/director Kenneth Branagh, who scored a box office hit with 2017's Murder on the Orient Express.
Working from a book that was first published in 1937, Branagh has spiced up his movie with plenty of fresh, contemporary faces. While he once again dons the whiskers as Poirot, the likes of Armie Hammer, Letitia Wright, Dawn French, Sophie Okenedo, Annette Bening, Ali Fazal, Rose Leslie, Jennifer Saunders and Russell Brand all line up to portray those under suspicion.
The victim: a glamorous heiress played by Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot. The scene of the crime: an Egyptian paddle steamer that seemingly offers few places for a diabolical murderer to hide. It's for good reason that Poirot claims this case "has altered the shape of my soul".
Back in 2017, Branagh toyed with the idea of an ongoing 'ChristieVerse': you'll remember that this story was teed up at the very end of Orient Express. (That's not how it worked in the original novels, but still.)
Branagh said: "I think there are possibilities, aren’t there? With 66 books and short stories and plays, she — and she often brings people together in her own books actually, so innately — she enjoyed that. You feel as though there is a world — just like with Dickens, there’s a complete world that she’s created — certain kinds of characters who live in her world — that I think has real possibilities."
Whether the conclusion of Death on the Nile sets up another instalment remains to be seen. Either way, it arrives on 9th October 2020, so tweet us your thoughts on the film. And if you've read the famously twisty book, don't give away the ending!
