Planning on watching Anthony Hopkins' deeply moving performance in The Father? We've rounded up some reactions from Cineworld Unlimited members who got to see the film last night during our advance screening.
Hopkins won his second Oscar for his performance as Anthony, an ailing man suffering from onset dementia. As Anthony begins to lose his grip on reality, he imagines that his beloved London flat is constantly changing around him. Even more disconcertingly, he perceives his loyal and concerned daughter Hannah (The Favourite's Olivia Colman) as a succession of different people.
Florian Zeller taps into universal truths surrounding ageing and loss in this majestic adaptation of his own stage play. Unlimited members say the movie is a harrowing but fulfilling and compassionate experience, in large part down to the skill of the central performances.
Oh my!!! What an emotional performance!! So on point!! To be able to take us into the mind of someone suffering dementia and the affect on those around the individual. Scarry and so true!! Anthony Hopkins and co stars have outdone their performances and had me in tears 🥺— Nita B Khatri (@scorpionrush) June 1, 2021
Moving, emotional and at times utterly brutal. Anthony Hopkins incredible with equally great support from Olivia Colman & Mark Gatiss. One of the toughest watches you will ever have, but absolutely worth it.— Dave Billingsley (@dab051176) June 1, 2021
Brilliant emotional film which is close to a masterpiece. Hopkins and Colman were great. It made you just want to cry at several moments during the film. Hopkins definitely deserved that Oscar. That ending goddamn was really sad. Everyone needs to see this film June 11th. 😭😭😭— Jake Pile (@DavidDunn69) June 1, 2021
Emotional. Powerful. Impactful. Thought-provoking. Clever.— Katie Samuel (@KatieSamuel) June 1, 2021
The way the film had you questioning your own mind whilst watching was incredible. A film that will remain with people for some time after watching.
Phenomenal performances from the two leads. Heartbreaking ending 😭
Really enjoyed the #UnlimitedScreening of #TheFather @Cineworld Nottingham tonight. Such a profoundly, hard hitting film, with wonderful performances that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout and making you question your own version of events.— Mark Marriott (@MarkMarriott87) June 2, 2021
