Cineworld 2019 in review: cinema openings, Unlimited screenings and more

We're at the end of 2019, so how was it for you? From our point of view at Cineworld, it was another fantastic year filled with new cinema openings, a multitude of exciting preview screenings and lots more. Scroll down to get a sense of our highlights from the past 12 months.

1. Total number of cinemas: 102

In July 2019, we celebrated the opening of our 100th Cineworld cinema at Rushden Lakes. But we didn't stop there. With the openings of York and Warrington this month, we’re now up to 102 Cineworld cinemas across the UK and Ireland. So if you’re visiting some friends over Christmas, why not drop by their local Cineworld? There's plenty to choose from, including Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

2. Total number of IMAX screens: 23

This year truly was a showcase for the breadth and majesty of IMAX presentation, and we were delighted to open three new IMAX screens this year at Rushden Lakes, Plymouth and York. This brings our IMAX total to more than 20, so what will next year hold? Watch this space...

3. Total number of 4DX screens: 28

Unique to Cineworld, 4DX allows you to feel the impact and atmosphere of your favourite blockbusters, deploying immersive effects like wind and rain along with moving seats. We opened seven new 4DX screens this year to bring our total to 28: Greenwich O2, Rushden Lakes, Plymouth, Cheltenham, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Broughton and Wembley.

4. Total number of ScreenX screens: 16

ScreenX is the next phase of your immersive Cineworld experience, allowing you to dive in and witness the biggest movies in 270 degree projection. We opened two new ScreenX screens this year at Rushden Lakes and York – and we're not planning to stop anytime soon.

5. Total number of ViP screens: 5

Watching the movie is one thing – making an evening of it with fine dining and drinks is something else entirely. That's where Cineworld ViP comes in, allowing you to spoil yourselves prior to the movie, before you watch the film itself in maximum comfort. In 2019, we added Cineworld ViP at Cineworld Greenwich O2, Cheltenham and York.

6. Total number of Cineworld Unlimited screenings this year: 39

Cineworld Unlimited members get to watch movies in advance courtesy of our Unlimited screenings. And 2019 was one of our best so far with the total number of advance screenings touching 40. One of the great things about this year was the breadth of movies on offer – from indie films to blockbusters, horror to comedy, foreign language film, it was an incredible year of previews.
