Have you booked your Cineworld Unlimited tickets for Shazam! yet? The DC superhero movie screens tonight in advance of its UK release date, so its high time you got about it.
Acclaimed by critics as one of the most entertaining movies in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) so far, the movie brings to life every comic book fan's fantasy. The story centres on orphaned teenager Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who is granted the ability to transform into a superhero by a mysterious wizard (Djimon Hounsou). All Billy has to do is say the sorcerer's name Shazam, and he will transform into a caped, and impossibly ripped, superhero complete with invulnerability and all manner of other powers.
Shazam himself is embodied by the goofy, likeable presence of Chuck and Thor actor Zachary Levi, who brilliantly distills the notion of a 14-year-old kid encased within a super-human's body. Imagine Tom Hanks's Big by way of Superman and you're some way towards envisaging the tone of the movie, which is directed by Annabelle: Creation film-maker David F. Sandberg.
Co-starring IT's Jack Dylan Grazer and Kick Ass's Mark Strong, the movie helps steer the DCEU further into bolder, brighter and funnier territory, akin to last year's record-busting Aquaman.
