2022 movie releases: 5 action spectaculars to watch out for

Looking to spill your popcorn during 2022? Here's a round-up of unmissable blockbusters headed your way in the next 12 months.

1. Uncharted

Release date 11th February 2022

The movie Tom Holland is Nathan Drake in this feature-length adaptation of the hit Naughty Dog gaming franchise. The Uncharted series has sold billions of units for the PlayStation, enveloping players in a digital Indiana Jones world of deadly traps and daring escapes. The movie has a lot to live up to in terms of assimilating Uncharted's breakneck pace and humour, but the A-list wattage of Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland, will surely help. Mark Wahlberg co-stars as Drake's mentor Sully and Venom director Ruben Fleischer is behind the camera. Can Uncharted break the curse of the video game movie and assert Holland as the flesh-and-blood Nathan of our dreams?

2. The Lost City

Release date 22nd April 2022

The movie Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum are a mismatched pair of bumbling adventurers in this frenetic action-comedy. Bullock plays a romance novelist who becomes embroiled in intrigue alongside her air-headed cover model, played by Tatum, while Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, plays the nefarious baddie on their tail. Brad Pitt makes a cameo appearance in a movie that deliberately channels the spirit of eighties classics like Romancing the Stone.

3. Top Gun: Maverick

Release date 27th May 2022

The movie Tom Cruise asserts his Hollywood dominance by returning to one of his signature roles. The original Top Gun movie from 1986 sent Cruise's profile into the stratosphere, forever cementing that cheeky grin as a trademark. Directed by the late Tony Scott, Top Gun was very much an emblem of the MTV era, replete with cheesy rock, Aviator shades and oodles of male bonding. Whether Top Gun: Maverick will achieve that same level of ironic enjoyment remains to be seen. We look forward to welcoming Maverick, now a Navy commander, back to the big screen, with the supporting cast including Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm and Ed Harris.

4. Jurassic World: Dominion

Release date 10th June 2022

The movie At the end of 2018's Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom, a host of dinosaurs were let loose on the American mainland. That cues us up for the prehistoric spectacle to come in the third and final Jurassic World movie, Dominion. We can't wait to see the ongoing conflict between humans and our prehistoric ancestors, which has already been teased in a jaw-dropping IMAX prologue. The always likeable Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard return as Owen and Claire, plus nostalgics will rejoice at the return of Jurassic Park veterans Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum.

5. Avatar 2

Release date 16th December 2022

The movie After several delays, the long-awaited second instalment in James Cameron's Avatar series is due to arrive. The 2009 movie engulfed us in the world of Pandora, aided by seamless CGI effects that, when seen in eye-popping 3D, felt all the more tactile and tangible. To that end, Avatar became the most commercially successful movie of all time with $2.8 billion in the bank. Several years later, we don't really know what Cameron has planned for the sequel, other than it will take place beneath the waves of Pandora and introduce us to new tribes of the Na'Vi. Kate Winslet and Michelle Yeoh are among the new faces with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang all set to return.
