Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can – including luring his prey in with promises of a new movie title. Tom Holland tore up Instagram and Twitter with a jokey post that purported to reveal the name of his next Spider-Man venture. He was, of course, trolling fans in his own unique style. And co-stars Zendaya and Jacob Batalon were also in on the act, putting forward their own movie names. Check it out below.
Each of these fake Spider-Titles teases a radically different approach. Holland's one, Phone Home, sounds like a wholesome Steven Spielberg adventure. Zendaya's, Home Slice, echoes the tone of a slasher thriller. And Batalon's, Home-Wrecker, sounds like a dysfunctional relationship drama.
We can surely expect tonal elements of each of the actor's pitches to feed into the new movie, from the feel-good factor to the menacing machinations of a villain (or villains) and ongoing hormonal romance. All that aside, it's good to see some new images of Peter Parker's Scooby gang, comprising himself, loyal friend Ned and girlfriend M.J. – would that we knew what the threesome is looking at on that computer...
Directed by Jon Watts, the third Spider-Man movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) comes in the wake of 2017's Homecoming and 2019's Far From Home. It's rumoured to be incorporating the multiverse principle from Oscar-winning 2018 animation Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The reason: non-MCU villains Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) and Electro (Jamie Foxx) will be featuring. This suggests a mix-up in the Spidey time-space continuum – could this possibly have something to do with the portal-shifting presence of a certain Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch)?
We're waiting with baited breath to see if previous Spider-Man Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will be appearing alongside Tom Holland. This has been shot down for the time being, but it could be a smokescreen. The multiverse would promise a dynamic expansion of the MCU as it enters Marvel Phase Four and Marvel Phase Five. The latter is already incorporating a new Blade movie, starring Mahershala Ali, and a new-look Fantastic Four, also to be directed by Jon Watts. And Holland has already promised (without spoilers, amazingly) that Spider-Man 3 will be the "most ambitious" superhero movie ever.
We're also eager to see how the third movie wraps up the threads left hanging at the end of Far From Home. That movie culminated with Spider-Man's identity being leaked to the wider world, a vicious, posthumous act of revenge from villain Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal).
That the news was publicly announced in Times Square by belligerent Daily Bugle newspaper editor J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) is another talking point. He's another character who originated outside of the MCU, in Sam Raimi's three Spider-Man movies starring Tobey Maguire. Again, this seems to fuel the rumours of a multiverse that will stitch together characters from different Spider-Man franchises.
