The Farewell is your next Cineworld Unlimited screening

Rising star Awkwafina may be best known for her comic roles, but she demonstrates an all-new side to her talents in forthcoming drama The Farewell. And we're delighted to announce it as the next Cineworld Unlimited screening on 16th September.

Hot off her roles in Ocean's 8 and Crazy Rich Asians, Awkwafina finds melancholy depths in the role of Billi, a Chinese-born woman who's grown up in the USA. When Billi hears that her grandmother has mere weeks to live, she journeys back to China to be with her – but there's a snag.

No-one has told beloved Nai-Nai that she is in fact dying. They are then forced to reunite under the pretence of a family wedding, which Billi is forced to navigate while coming to terms with her heritage and those she has left behind.

The Farewell is inspired by the real-life experiences of writer-director Lulu Wang, who has elicited critical acclaim with this, her second feature film.

The movie premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival where it generated a warm response. Christy Lemire, critic for RogerEbert.com, says Wang "achieves a masterful tonal balance throughout... She’s made a film about death that’s light on its feet and never mawkish". She also lauds Awkwafina's performance, saying "it's thrilling to see her previously untapped, formidable dramatic abilities on display in a lead role."
