Sylvester Stallone confirms Demolition Man 2 is coming

It's time to seek out the three seashells and accumulate swear credits, because Demolition Man 2 is on the way. That's according to the original film's star Sylvester Stallone, who let slip during an Instagram video.

"I think it’s coming," said Stallone. "We’re working on it right now with Warner Brothers. It’s looking fantastic. So, that should come out, that’s going to happen."

Got no idea what we're talking about in reference to the seashells and the swearing? Then it's high time you sought out the 1993 original. Demolition Man is one of the most entertaining shoot-em-ups of the decade, in which Stallone's 20th-century cop John Spartan is cryogenically unfrozen in an ultra-PC, 21st century Los Angeles.

The bad news is that his nemesis, violent criminal Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes), has also been unthawed for nefarious purposes. Together, these two analogue enemies bring chaos to a world in which swearing is a punishable offence, and where everything from spicy food to physical lovemaking is illegal.

As that description makes clear, Demolition Man is an action movie with a sense of wit and satire to go with the copious amounts of destruction. The movie was the product of uber-producer Joel Silver, whose back catalogue of testosterone-laden hits includes the likes of Die Hard. The film also offered an early, pre-Speed role to Sandra Bullock as Spartan's ally, cop Lenina Huxley.

It remains to be seen if Snipes will somehow appear in the sequel (no spoilers for those who haven't seen the original). The chemistry he shared with Stallone was one of the first film's highlights, so if they can replicate the magic for the follow-up movie, it'll be much welcomed.

Back in 2018, screenwriter Daniel Waters (who wrote cult classic Heathers) shared a bonkers idea for a sequel, for which Silver expressed enthusiasm.

“I get a call from Joel," Waters told The Projection Booth podcast. "'What do you think of this? Meryl Streep is Stallone’s daughter for the sequel. What do you think?' I’m like 'Okay, you get Meryl on the set and I’ll come out.'"

Now, that is something we'd like to see – but we won't hold our breath. Details surrounding cast and filmmakers are scant as the movie is clearly in the early development stages at Warner Bros. Nevertheless, you can tweet us your responses to the news @Cineworld.
