Did you watch Spider-Man: No Way Home over the last few days? If so, you were one of the people who helped bolster its remarkable box office performance. The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to star Tom Holland, No Way Home has posted a staggering $587 million global opening (at the time of writing), reports Variety.
Domestically (as in the USA and Canada), the movie opened to $253 million. That's the best domestic opening weekend of any movie released during the pandemic, vastly outstripping Venom: Let There Be Carnage's $90m opening. No Way Home massively exceeded the expectations of box office analysts who had expected the movie to open in the $130-$150m range.
Variety helps put those figures into a bit more context: "The movie has been a formidable force, zooming past opening weekend tickets sales for box office behemoths like 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247 million) and 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($220 million). It stands behind only Avengers: Endgame and 2017’s Avengers: Infinity War ($257 million debut) as the third-best opening weekend in history. Counting No Way Home, only eight films have ever crossed $200 million in ticket sales in a single weekend."
Combine that with the international opening weekend figures of $334 million, and you get the highest-grossing movie of the year so far. It's also the third-biggest worldwide opening weekend ever behind Avengers: Endgame ($1.2 billion) and Avengers: Infinity War ($640 million).
It's the kind of success that will induce a Norman Osborn-style gleeful cackle. It's all the more impressive given the gargantuan challenges that have faced (and continue to face) the theatrical motion picture industry. Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman echoed these sentiments: "This weekend’s historic Spider-Man: No Way Home’results, from all over the world and in the face of many challenges, reaffirm the unmatched cultural impact that exclusive theatrical films can have when they are made and marketed with vision and resolve."

UPDATE AS OF MONDAY AM PST: Deadline reports: "Sony has just made it official: their latest Marvel movie Spider-Man: No Way Home is the second-highest opening ever at the domestic box office with $260M, beating Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War‘s $257.698M. Sony updated their international B.O., which takes the Tom Holland-Zendaya-Benedict Cumberbatch and greater ensemble to $340.8M abroad, yielding a $600.8M global debut, still the third-highest ever behind Avengers: Endgame ($1.22 billion) and Avengers: Infinity War ($640.5M)."
