Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 teases Spider-Man 2099

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse dazzled us all back in 2018 with its concept of the Spider-Man multiverse. The gorgeously designed animated adventure threaded together a host of different Spidey characters from various realms, although it remained centrally focused on Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore).

Overseen by The LEGO Movie filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Spider-Verse was a huge success and swung away with the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. It was the first comic book movie to win any kind of Best Film award at the Oscars. Therefore, expectations for the upcoming sequel are sky-high.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is being helmed by Joachim Dos Santos, something of a comic book veteran in his own right. On his CV: DC animated series Justice League Unlimited, plus DC Showcase short films The Spectre and Jonah Hex. Lord and Miller are again producing, and Moore will return as the voice of Miles.

Now, some arresting new artwork has teased the introduction of Spider-Man 2099, confirms Empire. This character was previewed at the end of Spider-Verse, as voiced by Star Wars actor Oscar Isaac. (He'll be playing Solid Snake in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie.)

Spider-Man 2099 made his comic book debut in 1992. Otherwise known as Miguel O'Hara, he's a geneticist who attempts to replicate the original Spider-Man's DNA in other people, with disastrous results. This leads to him being invested, or cursed, with paralysing fangs, superstrength, enhanced vision and a lot more besides.

How he'll be integrated into the Spider-Verse 2 storyline remains to be seen. Clearly, there's a lot of room for aggressive expansion in the multiverse: already, we've seen an older, jaded Peter Parker (Jake Johnson), Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) and Spider-Ham (John Mulaney). The possibilities in ongoing movies are seemingly endless.
