National Theatre At Home: introducing Antony & Cleopatra

Have you heard about National Theatre At Home? It's the brilliant new way of streaming the best live productions into your own front room – entirely for free.

Every Thursday at 7PM UK time, they will be releasing one NT Live title on the National Theatre’s YouTube channel that can be watched for free, on-demand for seven days only.

It's exactly what we all need during this time of stringent, nationwide lockdowns. This week, we're introducing Shakespeare adaptation Antony & Cleopatra, including all the details of where you can stream it.

What is the story of Antony & Cleopatra?

Simon Godwin directs this sumptuous staging of Shakespeare's engrossing tragedy. Roman ruler Caesar is dead, and in his stead rules General Mark Antony. But the fierce Antony has fallen passionately in love with Egyptian Queen Cleopatra, which is set to ignite a violent conflict with longstanding repercussions.

The English Patient and Schindler's List actor Ralph Fiennes portrays Antony with Hotel Rwanda's Sophie Okenedo playing Cleopatra. Having helmed the critically lauded NT Live production of Twelfth Night, Godwin now mixes the archaic trappings of the original play with brutalist architecture and modern costuming to create an intriguing mixture.

How was Antony & Cleopatra received?

Godwin's production made its original NT Live debut in 2018, and was described as "spectacular" in a five-star review in The Times.

How long is Antony & Cleopatra available to stream for?

It is available to stream for one week from Thursday the 7th of May.
