Comedy icon Ron Burgundy returns to our cinema screens in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, out now in Cineworld.
The sequel is set a few years after the events of 2004 comedy milestone Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. And if the first film hilariously sent up the ’70s, then it’s only fitting that the sequel should see Ron and the guys doing their thing in the whole new ball game that is the 1980s.
“The fun of these characters is they confront change very poorly,” says director and co-writer Adam McKay, “so they’ve got some more change coming their way…”
At the start of the sequel, Ron is still the king of San Diego news, happily married to his beautiful wife and co-anchor Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate). Also still on the scene are Ron’s good buddies and long-time team-mates – randy field reporter Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), macho sports reporter Champ Kind (David Koechner) and loveably idiotic weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell).
But then ambitious Veronica’s career begins to skyrocket, as she gets the chance to cover the kind of heavyweight news stories that Ron could never manage. “Why do we have to tell the people what they need to hear?” he complains. “Why can’t the news be fun?”
It looks like Ron is all washed up, but then salvation rears its head with a new format – a 24-hour news channel – for which our hero and his gang are uniquely qualified. With comedy titan Will Ferrell leading the cast – ably supported by Applegate plus fan favourites Rudd, Koechner and Carell – Anchorman 2 also promises some sterling support stars including X-Men’s James Marsden and screen legend Harrison Ford.
Bridesmaids star Kristen Wiig also has a role (she reportedly plays Brick’s love interest!), while Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn both return in their popular guest roles as rival newscasters Frank Vitchard and Wes Mantooth. In addition the film features a wealth of A-List cameos from the worlds of movies and music, including Kanye West, Will Smith and Nicole Kidman!
