Legally Blonde 3 is coming from Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling

Grab your low-viscosity rayon and clutch bag, because the adorably bubbly Elle Woods is returning to the big screen in Legally Blonde 3.

Reese Witherspoon's fashionista airhead turned expert lawyer will be making her long-awaited return – and we mean long-awaited. Following the smash-hit original Legally Blonde movie in 2001, sequel Red, White and Blonde arrived in 2003. Yes, it really was 17 years ago since we last saw her.

As reported by Deadline, Witherspoon will be producing through her Hello Sunshine production studio, and she's enlisted some help to write the screenplay. The Mindy Project's Mindy Kaling (aka the voice of disgust in Disney-Pixar's Inside Out) will be teaming with The Daily Show's Dan Goor to give Elle a vibrant update.

A delighted Kaling shared the news on Twitter – and, in the words of Elle herself, encouraged fans to bend and snap.

Mindy Kaling confirmed as writing Legally Blonde 3

Based on Amanda Brown's novel of the same name, Legally Blonde emerged as a surprise critical and commercial hit, gifting Witherspoon one of her most memorable characters. The film grossed $141 million worldwide, and if the sequel didn't live up to it, that was perhaps inevitable.

Nevertheless, it would appear that the filmmakers, along with the fans, are ready to deliver another dose of Elle. No release date has been announced yet, so watch the blog for more details, and tweet us your favourite franchise moments @Cineworld.
