Out now in Cineworld, Oscar-nominated drama If Beale Street Could Talk mixes a tender love story with a hard-hitting look at racial injustice.
Celebrated Moonlight director Barry Jenkins adapts James Baldwin's novel, focusing on young 1970s Harlem couple Fonny (Stephan James) and Tish (KiKi Layne). As they prepare to welcome their first child into the world, their happiness is shattered when Fonny is sent to prison on a false charge of rape – prompting Tish and her family to help spearhead his release before the baby is born.
Resplendent in the sensitive character dynamics and gorgeous visuals that earmarked Moonlight, Beale Street ultimately rises on the strength of its performances. Oscar nominee Regina King is a stand-out as Tish's loving mother Sharon, while James and Layne are engrossing as the young lovers forced to confront the deeply ingrained prejudice of the time.
