This year has posed a formidable challenge for many Hollywood productions. The emergence of COVID-19 forced many movies to go into a temporary shutdown, only re-opening again when they were able to adhere to safety protocols, distancing and mask-wearing.
Along with Mission: Impossible 7, one of the movies that's come through the chaos is Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley. Filming at the start of the year, the production then shut down as the pandemic took hold. However, the director was able to pull it back together in the final quarter of the year, and he's now saluting the end of principal photography.
The Oscar-winning director of The Shape of Water and Pan's Labyrinth celebrated this momentous achievement on Twitter – wearing his mask, naturally. He also promises that the movie will make its new release date of December 2021.

An all-star cast assembles for Del Toro's latest. Based on William Lindsay Gresham's novel, Nightmare Alley focuses on the promoter of a travelling carnival (known as a 'barker') who becomes ensnared with a host of oddball characters. The original story already inspired a 1947 movie starring Tyrone Power, and Del Toro's film has lined up some huge 21st-century names.
A Star Is Born's Bradley Cooper plays the aforementioned barker, Stan, while there's support from Cinderella's Cate Blanchett, The Lighthouse's Willem Dafoe, Hereditary's Toni Collette, The Shape of Water's Richard Jenkins, Drive's Ron Perlman (a Del Toro favourite), Lion's Rooney Mara and The Bourne Ultimatum's David Strathairn. That's an incredible cast, working with a truly pioneering and creative filmmaker who delights in the grotesque and the fantastical. (He's also producing upcoming horror Antlers.)
