You'd think after the double-whammy of Saving Private Ryan and Captain Phillips that Tom Hanks would be done with both World War II and boats. But the trailer for his latest drama, Greyhound, combines those two facets for a gripping drama, inspired by a true story.
Directed by Aaron Schneider and written by Hanks himself, the film recaps the fraught mission across the Atlantic Ocean to deliver Allied soldiers safely into Europe. Hanks plays the Captain on his very first command in 1942, who is tasked with protecting a vast convoy of vessels with no air protection.
The film takes place in the so-called Atlantic 'Black Pit', a stretch of ocean infested with German U-boats who were vying to hold back the tide of the conflict. The Irishman's Stephen Graham plays Hanks' second-in-command and Hollow Man's Elisabeth Shue is the wife anxiously waiting for news back home.
As one would expect from Hanks, the film looks like it puts compassion and decency front and centre, exploring the unique stresses on the individuals involved. The movie is based on the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd by C. S. Forester. and was partially filmed on decommissioned destroyer named the USS Kidd, for maximum authenticity.
