"Don't ask for permission to be you." That's the rousing message of Everybody's Talking About Jamie, the first trailer for which has strutted its way online.
The smash-hit stage musical is now adapted for the big screen, courtesy of original creator Jonathan Butterell who takes charge as director. Doctor Who writer Tom MacRae is on scripting duties, bringing us the heartfelt story of a Sheffield schoolboy who follows his destiny of becoming a drag queen.
Max Harwood plays Jamie New who finds himself at odds with his father (The Witch's Ralph Ineson) when he lays bare his greatest source of inspiration. Mentored by his mother (Happy Valley's Sarah Lancashire) and fellow drag artist Hugo Battersby aka Loco Chanelle (Can You Ever Forgive Me's Richard E. Grant), Jamie begins his high-heeled, gloriously vampish journey towards fame.
The film is inspired by the true story of Jamie Campbell, and judging from the trailer it follows in the earthy yet inspiring footsteps of Billy Elliot, The Full Monty and other British classics. Promising breakout performances from its rising stars, plus scene-stealing support from the veteran players and a fabulous onslaught of costumes, this may be exactly what we need to blow away the cobwebs of 2020. A movie that embraces change, compassion and the best wigs money can buy couldn't have arrived at a better time.
