Newcomer Elsie Fisher gives a winning performance as awkward teen Kayla, a middle schooler navigating a rush of hormones and life choices. As a dedicated YouTuber, Kayla is used to dispensing advice on her own channel – but what does her own future hold? As she prepares to leave her eighth grade year, it may be time to set down her phone and listen to her father Mark (Josh Hamilton).

Eighth Grade is the feature film debut from musician and comedian turned director Bo Burnham. He's perhaps best known for his scene-stealing role in 2017 comedy hit The Big Sick, and critics agree he has successfully made the transition to chronicler of teen angst par excellence.

The movie premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival where it received near-unanimous praise. The movie currently holds an impressive 99% on Rotten TomatoesTime Out's Joshua Rothkopf describes the movie as a "lovely work", adding that it's "lifted up by a timeless piece of indie wisdom: Keep it real, as cringe-inducing as that can be".
