First Man

What's the story? On the heels of their six-time Academy Award-winning smash, La La Land, Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling reteam for Universal Pictures' FIRST MAN, the riveting story of NASA's mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. A visceral, first-person account, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the movie will explore the sacrifices and the cost--on Armstrong and on the nation--of one of the most dangerous missions in history.

Smallfoot

What's the story? An animated adventure for all ages, with original music and an all-star cast, 'Smallfoot' turns the Bigfoot legend upside down when a bright young Yeti finds something he thought didn't exist—a human. News of this 'smallfoot' brings him fame and a chance with the girl of his dreams. It also throws the simple Yeti community into an uproar over what else might be out there in the big world beyond their snowy village, in a rollicking story about friendship, courage and the joy of discovery.

Halloween – 40th anniversary re-release (Wednesday 10th October, 8.30pm)

What's the story? Coming to cinemas this October is the 40th Anniversary release of John Carpenter's Halloween, including an interview and retrospective with filmmaker John Carpenter. John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN premiered on October 25, 1978, not in Los Angeles with a big event at Mann's Chinese Theatre - instead it opened in Kansas City. It did quite well there and opened up in Chicago, and then earned showings in New York. From there, it had a platform release across the country, playing in different cities at different times. Over 40 years later, the movie has made its money back more than 200 times! This earned it the title of the most successful independent horror movie of all time. It's one of the most successful independent flicks overall, behind Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Blair Witch Project.

Kler (Polish)

What's the story? A few years ago, three Catholic priests' fates were joined together by a tragic event. Their lives were miraculously saved. Now, on every anniversary the clergymen meet to celebrate their survival. Each took a different path. Lisowski is moving up the ladder in the church administration in a big city, dreaming about the Vatican. Standing in his way is the Archbishop, a luxury-loving dignitary who uses political influence to build the largest sanctuary in Poland... The second priest, Trybus is a rural pastor. Serving in a place full of poverty, he slowly succumbs to human weaknesses. Kukula is not very successful, either, and despite his fervent faith, loses the trust of his parishioners overnight. Soon, the clergymen's paths will cross again, and the events that will take place will have an impact on the life of each of them.

Varathan (Malayalam)

What's the story? Aby (Fahadh Faasil), who had just lost his job in Dubai, lands in a village with Priya (Aishwarya Lekshmi), his wife. The young couple moves to Priya's ancestral property, a farmhouse in the hills, a terrain that's in part alluring and part eerie. Priya who has a modern lifestyle becomes a target of a particularly unrefined culture of the village. Her husband is considered as a Varathan (outsider) by the villagers and viewed with less significance. One day, some nearby youths who had been disturbing Priya, attacks and violates her. Aby thinks of complaining to the police, and she mocks him for being a coward. A teenager who was having an affair with the sister of onAe of the youths who violated Priya runs into Aby's house for protection. Aby takes a firm position and decides to defend the teenager. He fights the family and the youths who intends to kill the teenager. They are drawn into a deadly game of Aby's passive anger, violence, and ferocity. The second half turns hostility's twin side with suspense in the air.

ROH Royal Ballet live: Mayerling (Monday 15th October, 7.15pm)

What's the story? Mayerling is a classic of the Royal Ballet repertory, with its emotional depth, haunting imagery, and one of the most demanding roles ever created for a male dancer. Kenneth MacMillan choreographed a complex work around the psychologically tormented heir to the Habsburg Empire, Crown Prince Rudolf. From the ballet’s start, the glamour of the Austro-Hungarian court is contrasted with undercurrents of sexual and political intrigue that drive the story to its violent climax in a double suicide. The large cast allows for impressive ensembles in addition to the ballet's many solos of distinctive character and pas de deux of disturbing eroticism. This ballet, bursting with intensity, madness and passion, proves that sometimes the truth is more scandalous than fiction.

They Shall Not Grow Old (3D) and live Q&A with director Peter Jackson (Tuesday 16th October, 6pm)

What's the story? On the centenary of the end of First World War, Academy Award-winner Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) presents the World Premiere of an extraordinary new work showing the Great War as you have never seen it. This unique film brings into high definition the human face of the First World War as part of a special London Film Festival presentation alongside a live Q&A with director Peter Jackson hosted by Mark Kermode. Using state of the art technology to restore original archival footage which is more than a 100-years old, Jackson brings to life the people who can best tell this story: the men who were there. Driven by a personal interest in the First World War, Jackson set out to bring to life the day-to-day experience of its soldiers. After months immersed in the BBC and Imperial War Museums’ archives, narratives and strategies on how to tell this story began to emerge for Jackson. Using the voices of the men involved, the film explores the reality of war on the front line; their attitudes to the conflict; how they ate; slept and formed friendships, as well what their lives were like away from the trenches during their periods of downtime. Jackson and his team have used cutting edge techniques to make the images of a hundred years ago appear as if they were shot yesterday. The transformation from 2D black and white footage to colourised 3D footage can be seen throughout the film revealing never before seen details. Reaching into the mists of time, Jackson aims to give these men voices, investigate the hopes and fears of the veterans, the humility and humanity that represented a generation changed forever by a global war.

Peterloo live event (Wednesday 17th October, 6.45pm)

What's the story? An epic portrayal of the events surrounding the infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre, where a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St Peter’s Field in Manchester turned into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history. The massacre saw British government forces charge into a crowd of over 60,000 that had gathered to demand political reform and protest against rising levels of poverty. Many protestors were killed and hundreds more injured, sparking a nationwide outcry but also further government suppression. The Peterloo Massacre was a defining moment in British democracy which also played a significant role in the founding of The Guardian newspaper.
