Avengers: Infinity War sets more box office records
The latest Marvel epic continues its surge towards box office glory. Domestically, Avengers: Infinity War grossed $112.5m in its second weekend, topping Black Panther's already impressive $111.6 million. That makes it the second-biggest second weekend of all time, reports Variety. (The current record holder is still Star Wars: The Force Awakens with $149m.)
When the movie's second weekend international totals are added, the combined total is $275.1m. Taking into account its opening weekend grosses, Infinity War has become the fastest movie to reach the $1bn box office milestone, having accomplished it in just 11 days. The coveted $2bn mark is surely now in sight.
Interestingly, no summer release has succeeded on the latter front. The current $2bn champs were all released outside of that window: The Force Awakens in December 2015, Avatar in December 2009 and Titanic (the last two of which were directed by James Cameron) in December 1997. Close calls include 2015's Jurassic World, released in June 2015, which took $1.6bn globally. Infinity War will, however, overthrow that in a mere matter of days.
Sherlock Holmes 3 will arrive in December 2020
The game is afoot! It's been a while since we greeted Robert Downey Jr.'s sardonic take on Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, but the wait will soon be over. Well, if you can call a two and half year wait, 'soon'.
It's been announced the pugilistic sleuth, revitalised by Revolver director Guy Ritchie in two movies released in 2009 and 2011, will be returning. According to Empire, the movie is eyeing a Christmas 2020 release window with Jude Law also back as Holmes' trusty sidekick, Doctor Watson.
There's no confirmation as to whether Ritchie will be back, although it's been reported that writer Chris Brancato, acclaimed for drug cartel series Narcos, is on board. Can we therefore expect London's finest to be grappling with all manner of nefarious opium dealers? It's surely too early to call.
In the meantime, here's one of our favourite scenes of Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes. And if you want more of him, check out our spoiler-filled rundown of Avengers: Infinity War.
Sylvester Stallone will be back in Rambo 5
You just can't keep an action icon down. Not content with resurrecting boxing champ Rocky in the acclaimed Creed and the forthcoming Creed 2, Sylvester 'Sly' Stallone will be bringing his other celebrated character back to our screens.
Vietnam vet John Rambo, who battled his way through three 1980s slabs of movie testosterone before making a long-delayed comeback in 2008, is going to return in Rambo V. Screendaily reports the character will be battling Mexican drug cartels in a bid to rescue a kidnapped child.
Described as "a violent descent into hell", we can only imagine the carnage: the aforementioned 2008 movie John Rambo packed an astonishing amount of bloodshed into its slender 90 minute running time. Nevertheless, this is what we've come to expect from the series as Rambo fights for justice. Production is scheduled to start on 1st September and will encompass London, Bulgaria, and the Canary Islands.
