Renowned tenor Jonas Kaufmann makes his role debut in a new production of Verdi's passionate opera. Often cited as his greatest and most mature work, Verdi's penultimate opera is a brilliant interpretation of Shakespeare's great tragedy of jealousy, deception and murder. It provides a powerful and poignant musical language for the story of Venetian general Otello, who descends into madness after being tricked by envious Iago into believing that his bride Desdemona is having an affair. Its many highlights include Otello and Desdemona's rapturous love duet and Desdemona's haunting 'Willow Song'. Drawing on the full forces of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, the Royal Opera Chorus and a stellar line-up of principal singers, this new production by Olivier Award-winning director Keith Warner sees world famous tenor Jonas Kaufmann make his role debut as Otello. Soprano Maria Agresta will be his Desdemona and baritone Ludovic Tezier his nemesis, Iago. The conductor is Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano.
