Ex-Python Terry Gilliam's spectacular production of Berlioz's first opera - live from the London Coliseum. Vatican treasurer Balducci (Pavlo Hunka) has been instructed by Pope Clement VII (Willard White) to commission Benvenuto Cellini (Michael Spyres) to cast a bronze statue of Perseus. Balducci's preferred artist is Fieramosca (Richard Burkhard), mainly because he hopes the sculptor will marry his daughter Teresa (Corinne Winters). But Teresa is in love with Cellini. Berlioz's first opera features such magnificent visual and musical set-pieces as the Mardi Gras carnival. But it is notoriously difficult to stage and rarely seen today. That kind of challenge doesn't faze legendary 'Brazil' director Terry Gilliam, who triumphed in 2011 with his production of Berlioz's 'The Damnation of Faust'. Now he reunites with ENO Music Director Edward Gardner for this glorious re-imagining. The stellar cast includes rising tenor Michael Spyres, stunning soprano Corinne Winters and ENO favourite Willard White.
