Richard Strauss' intensely powerful opera returns to the Met. For over 100 years, Elektra has been one of opera's most shocking productions. A psychologically intense and violent production, it focuses on its title character's plans to avenge the murder of her father by her own mother. After his success with the masterful Salome, Richard Strauss turned to Hugo von Hofmannsthal's adaptation of Sophocles' Electra for his next project. Elektra dazzled audiences when it premiered in 1909 with its mixture of Greek tragedy and early 20th century Freudian psychology. Soprano Nina Stemme makes for a magnificent Elektra with legendary mezzo-soprano Waltraud Meier as Elektra's fearsome mother, Klytamnestra and soprano Adrianne Pieczonka and bass-baritone Eric Owens as Elektra's troubled siblings.
