It's fair to say we've come to expect a lot from Dame Judi Dench. After all she is one of the greatest living actresses of stage, screen and TV.
Even so, the prospect of her returning to one of her most celebrated character incarnations is very exciting indeed. Step forward the first trailer for sumptuous historical drama Victoria and Abdul, one that sees the actress again adopt the mantle of the legendary Queen Victoria following 1997's Mrs. Brown.
We pick up with Britain's monarch years after the events of that movie, in the twilight years of her life as the country's longest-serving monarch. Directed by Stephen Frears, himself a dab hand at royalty drama with the likes of The Queen, the story focuses on Queen Victoria and Abdul Karim, a young clerk who travelled from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.
Combining Dench's formidable acting chops with the directorial prowess of Frears, plus a score from noted Shawshank and American Beauty composer Thomas Newman, there's every chance this could get the Oscar voters excited. Check out the trailer below.
Victoria and Abdul is released on 15th September.
