Venom sequel talks confirm Tom Hardy, plus a possible Spider-Man crossover

It's official: Tom Hardy will be back to swim with more lobsters in Venom 2. Following the blockbusting success of the Sony superhero movie, producer Amy Pascal says the star is officially on for the sequel.

"I can say that Tom Hardy will be back, magnificently playing that character as no one else can," Pascal told Fandango. "It’s a couple of things. One of them is that Sony did a great job creating that franchise and giving it a life and giving it its own world. Then there’s Tom Hardy. When you think of Venom, you’ll never be able to think of anyone but Tom Hardy sitting in that bathtub of lobsters."

Released to middling reviews in October 2018, Venom then went on to devour the box office, amassing $855 million by the end of its global run. The movie firmly established Hardy as troubled journalist turned symbiote host Eddie Brock, with the mid-credits scene teasing the debut appearance of Woody Harrelson's Cletus Kassady, aka Carnage, presumably the next film's big bad.

The movie is the first step in the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters, one running adjacent to the Disney-distributed Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). But we needn't rule out a possible collaboration between the two studios: excitingly, Marvel's Kevin Feige has teased the possibility of a Venom/Spider-Man crossover movie. It would therefore be a battle of the Toms, as Hardy takes on Holland's wall-crawler. So is it likely to happen?

"I think probably it’s up to Sony," Feige tells Cinemablend. "Sony has both those characters and has Venom in their world. I don’t know what their plans are for another Venom or if they’re doing that. But it seems likely at some point."

A mere pipe dream? Venom writer Jeff Pinkner has already said "it is not impossible that in a future/upcoming Venom movie, Spider-Man will play a significant role", reports Flickering Myth. And producer Pascal is also enthusiastic: "Everybody would love to see that. You never know someday… It might happen."

Venom 2 is tentatively scheduled for 2nd October 2020, and if that seems too far away, watch Holland in action in this summer's Spider-Man: Far From Home. The movie is released on 2nd July.
