Toy Story 4: everything we know so far

screen-poster

Unless you've been inhabiting the farthest reaches of space, you'll be aware that a new Toy Story movie is incoming.

It is, of course, the fourth in Disney-Pixar's masterful series, one that singlehandedly revolutionised the possibilities of CGI big-screen animation – and the really good news is our favourite characters are back for another adventure. Here's what we know.

Are Woody and Buzz back in Toy Story 4?

Yes, they are. If you remember (and try not to tear up reading this), 2010's Toy Story 3 ended with former toy owner Andy all grown up and going off to college. He left his pals Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and the rest of the gang in the hands of young girl Bonnie, in what is surely one of the most perfect endings to a film.

It was the tear-jerking yet optimistic resolution to Pixar's ground-breaking series that began in 1995 and continued with the second instalment in 2000 – adding up to three movies that established Pixar as a major creative force and made us speculate what toys get up to behind closed doors.

What's the storyline of Toy Story 4?

Former Pixar Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter revealed plot details at the 2015 Disney D23 Expo. He explained the movie would focus on Woody's relationship with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), who is partly based on his wife, computer engineer Nancy.

"Bo Peep really reminds me of my wife Nancy in many ways," Digital Spy quoted him as saying. "And my wife Nancy has an incredible emotional story, before I met her, so it's a very personal story – as is every film at Pixar. But that's what this one is for me. It's a very touching story that's inspired by my love for my wife."

However, that was some years ago and, with Lasseter having now stepped down along with several other key creatives, Toy Story 4 has now taken a different route. Instead, it's now being described as "a road trip adventure".

Along with the new teaser trailer, Disney has revealed the following: "Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that's Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called Forky to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy."

Who is Forky in Toy Story 4?

As we can see from the teaser, he appears to be formed out of pipe-cleaners and plastic cutlery. He also appears to be clumsy, causing havoc for all the rest of the characters (prompting Woody to yell off-camera, "Stop him before he pokes someone's eye out").

Combine Forky's makeshift appearance with his malleable features (we imagine that mouth will be turned down on more than one occasion to heartbreaking effect), and we could be looking at another classic Pixar creation.

Voiced by Arrested Development actor Tony Hale, Forky is described as "an actual spork-turned-craft project who insists he isn't a toy". So he essentially sounds like a spork version of Pinocchio. But is a spork technically classed as a toy?

"The world of Toy Story is built upon the idea that everything in the world has a purpose," director Josh Cooley explained in a statement. "A toy’s purpose is to be there for its child. But what about toys that are made out of other objects? Forky is a toy that Bonnie made out of a disposable spork, so he’s facing a crisis. He wants to fulfil his purpose as a spork, but now has a new toy." purpose thrust upon him."

Who is directing Toy Story 4?

Toy Story 4 was originally going to have been directed by John Lasseter with a script from Will McCormack and Rashida Jones. However, a major creative reshuffle saw them all depart the project and give way to director Josh Cooley (who co-wrote Pixar's extraordinary Oscar-winning Inside Out), with a script from Stephany Folsom (an uncredited writer on Marvel's blockbusting Thor: Ragnarok).

The question now remains: will Bo Peep still be involved? Earlier this year, actress Annie Potts confirmed that "three-quarters of the script has been rewritten", so it remains to be seen whether she and Buzz will be at the heart of the story.

Are the other Toy Story characters returning for the fourth movie?

Yes, as per the trailer, Jessie, Rex, Mr and Mrs Potato Head and Slinky are all back, although the question over Bo Peep still remains.

Is Keanu Reeves voicing a toy in Toy Story 4?

Yes, he is – and if you don't believe us, here's Tim Allen confirming it.

Is there a Toy Story 4 trailer?

Yes – in fact there are not one but two Toy Story 4 trailers, revealing new characters Forky, Ducky and Bunny.
