Guillermo Del Toro is used to spinning elaborate, extraordinary fantasy yarns from his Oscar winning masterpiece Pan's Labyrinth to lavish Gothic melodrama Crimson Peak. Even so, his latest looks to shake things up a little bit.
The Shape of Water marks a departure of sorts for the director, set during the height of Cold War paranoia in 1960s America. We pick up with Sally Hawkins' mute cleaner Elisa who makes a shocking discovery within the government laboratory where she works.
It turns out her bosses are holding captive a mysterious, aquatic creature and will do anything to ensure her silence on the matter. But when she forms a connection with the monster, things get dangerous.
Boasting a stellar cast including Michael Shannon and Octavia Spencer, this looks to be as beautiful and weird an experience as we've come to expect from the director. Before presenting you with the trailer, here's a beautiful piece of concept art from James Jean, teasing out the monstrous and romantic atmosphere of Del Toro's story.
